PETERSEN MEDIA- A very wild and eventful weekend during the Howard Kaeding Classic at the Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, CA culminated on Saturday night with Tommy Tarlton charging to a third place finish from his 19th starting spot.
“It was definitely a weekend with a full moon,” Tarlton said of the events that took place both Friday and Saturday night. “It was exciting, and I am thankful Paul Baines and the guys stayed the course, and we were able to end our weekend with a third place finish.”
Saturday night with the King of the West Series, the Easton, CA driver kicked his night off by timing in 13th fastest, after being in the last group of qualifiers.
Heat race action saw Tarlton wheelie up on the start of the race, and as he tried to get settled down, contact ensued and his machine got upside down, forcing the Elite Landscape Construction/Tarlton and Son/Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino entry to make a stop in the B Main.
Finishing third in the B, Tarlton transferred to the feature event, though his work was cut out for him, as he lined up in the 10th row.
Following a caution on the second lap, the next 23 laps ripped off with no stoppages, and Tarlton navigated through the field from the back of the pack, as he had a car that could move around on the surface.
When the red flag waived on the 25th lap, Tarlton had worked his way up to the ninth spot, before the final five laps, were plagued with stoppages.
On each restart, Tarlton was able to pick up a few positions, and when the checkered flag flew on the event, Tarlton completed a very strong run as he crossed the stripe in the third spot.
“We had a wild night, and to be truthful, the cautions at the end of the race helped us,” he said. “We were able to pick up some spots, and ended on the podium.”
Friday night Tarlton kicked his weekend off by taking on the Civil War Series Presented By Flowmaster in the opening night of the Howard Kaeding Classic.
Again timing in during the last group of qualifiers, Tarlton timed in seventh fastest, before finishing third in his heat race.
Pulling the eight pill in the redraw, Tarlton would get off to a nice start in the feature event, as he worked his way up to sixth in a race that was filled with cautions and stoppages.
On a lap 11 restart, contact ensued resulting in Tarlton’s machine getting upside down, and his night coming to an early end.
“We tore some stuff up over the weekend, which we hate to do, but we have a great team who never gives up, and I am very thankful for that.”
Tarlton Racing would like to thank Elite Landscape Construction, Tarlton and Son, Inc., Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino, Pabco Gypsum, WFO Apparel, Bandy and Associates, All Star Performance, Corporate America Investments, and BG Lubricants for their support through the 2014 season.
ON TAP: Tarlton will return to action on July 25 at the Ocean Speedway before taking of the King of the West Series at the Thunderbowl for the Peter Murphy Classic.
