PETERSEN MEDIA- Tommy Tarlton picked the right night to pick up his first win at the Ocean Speedway in 2014 as he dominating win on Friday night locked him into the dash of this Saturday night’s Johnny Key Classic.
“It was awesome to get a win, my first since my wife had her stroke, and it’s amazing to have her here by my side,” Tarlton said. “I can’t thank my dad, Paul Baines, and all of our sponsors who make this all possible.”
With 29 cars checked in at the Ocean Speedway for what was the fourth and final Johnny Key Qualifier, Tarlton stopped the clock with the fifth fastest lap during time trials.
Starting third in his heat race, the Easton, CA driver pocketed a second place finish, transferring into the feature event, and earning him a spot in the night’s redraw, where he would find himself with the one-pill.
Leading the field to green, Tarlton would feel some early pressure from Shane Golobic, but after distancing himself from Golobic a few laps into the race, he was un challenged aboard his Elite Landscape Construction/Tarlton and Son/Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino entry.
Though the race was slowed by numerous cautions throughout the event, Tarlton was flawless on double file restarts, and continually pulled away from the field, as he went on to win his second race of 2014, and lock into the Johnny Key Classic Main Event.
“This was a big win for us, and I couldn’t be happier to be locked into the Johnny Key Classic,” he added. “Hopefully we can come back next weekend with another great car, and win another Johnny Key Classic.”
